the difference is that while you were part of the 90’s one you are not part of the burmese one. and while you were an illegal immigrant the burmese are genuine monks

There is a very vast difference like the sky and the earth between the uprising in the present day Burma and the uprising in our country in the 90s.

The uprising in the Burma is legally, politically, humanitarianly and democratically right in every perspective. How can you expect people to live under dictatorship and suppression in this age of democracy and freedom? Burma was under the military dictatorship for the last two decades. The dictators have raped the country. Burma is a very sacred place. The landscape of Burma is dotted everywhere with Buddhist pagodas and stupas. Burma possesses many true relics of Buddha. Some of the most wonderful Buddhist stupas are in Burma like the massive gold (not golden) stupa of Chawedagong. It could have been a major tourist destination and a pilgrimage land for Buddhists all over the world. That way the country could have earned million dollar revenues like its neighbour Thailand which is prospering mainly due to its cheap tourism industry. But that was not possible under the rule of the dictators. They have plundered the country’s rich natural resources and accumulated wealth in their personal Swiss bank accounts at the cost of Burmese people who are wearing rags, eating hand-to-mouths and living in the slums. Burma is the richest country in terms of natural resources in the Indo-China peninsula but it is the poorest country because of the form of government in the country. People are suppressed. Social welfare for the Burmese people is very poor. In fact the dictators have plundered the country so much so that the string of tolerance is breaking now.

However, the uprising of the 90s in Bhutan is illegal, irrational, and undemocratically wrong in every perspective. First, Bhutan had been enjoying the sunshine of peace under our fourth king. Even under a monarchy, Bhutanese people had been enjoying a very high degree of democratic freedom and movement unlike the people of Nepal under their monarchy. The decision to make people wear the national dress gho and kira for all the bonafide citizens of Bhutan was passed out from the National Assembly by a landslide majority in the house in order to promote our idea of a small country with a unique national identity to strengthen our sovereignty and independence. The Assembly also passed out an act to evict all people who were illegally residing in our country. This act, like in any other country, is a very rational act because we do not want illegal immigrants residing in our country and using our limited natural resources. This was misconstrued by the illegal immigrants who were residing along the southern foothills of our country for a long time and they started to spread propagandas and arouse anti-national sentiments among the migrant workers who were mostly from Nepal and across the Indian border. This situation was taken advantage by some people who embezzled huge government funds and who are waiting to be tried in a court of law hoping they could get away somehow. Some criminals also took advantage of the sentiments of the illegal migrants and used these migrants to strike against the government resulting in so much horrendous bloodshed in the 90s.

Both the outcomes in Burma and Bhutan in the 90s are similar in one way because both situations arose due to principle of democracy in its true sense.  Majority of the Burmese do not want the military rule. Majority of the Burmese people want democracy in the country. The few people who choose military rule are a minority. The few people who do not want democracy are a minority. So there is a clash between the majority and the minority. In Bhutan, majority of our people want to enforce the preservation of our unique identity of wearing gho and kira. Majority of our people want to chase out the illegal and ungrateful migrants residing in our country. But there are a few who do not want to preserve our culture because they feel they are compelled to Bhutanize. And of course, the illegal residents are not satisfied with the new act. That is understandable. These people are a minority. So, there too is a clash between the majority and the minority in Bhutan. This is the only similarity.

Summary: there is no comparison at all.

Similarities???
Southern & Eastern Problem were subdued by security forces who were no other than RBA in the mask of peacekeeping force. Burma incident? haven’t heard that Military are raping innocent women and children. Differences is that RBA personals raped mothers in front of children and wife infront of husband. Burmese were peaceful demonstration so eastern monks were too peacefull demonstrators. Difference Burmese minlitary shoot the demonstrators directly but in east it was counted as accident. Being RGOB officer he didn’t knew how to keep his gun safely. Killing in south?? I don’t have to explain.
Burmese were demanding democracy and freedom so in Bhutan were also demanding. Difference: Burmese wanted freedom from Military rule , Bhutan was ruled by dictatorship like monarchy. Southerners were illegals to say but how about easterner??

Ata Dorjee...I am sure you are one of the disgruntled Sharchokpa Atas who were trying to over throw the rule of monarchy in the eastern Bhutan. Or, may be you are such an ignorant Sharchokpa Ata!!

Actually I don’t have to make any explanations to you but if my explanation can shine a light in your darkness, I will do that for you.
I will give you some backgrounds. Allow me to keep the details confidential as it is our national security matter. Some years ago, a group of people in the eastern Bhutan led by a revered and renowned Lama (I will not disclose his name) was trying to overthrow the rule of our government in the eastern Bhutan with the help of some innocent local villagers and faithful locals and some faithful ethnic people dedicated to the Lama from the Tawang region, AP, India. This Lama wanted to establish a small autonomous religious state like the Daramsala in Bhutan. This group of people was mostly composed of gomchens and anims who were very much dedicated to the Lama, and of course the Lama took advantage of their faith in him and poisoned them with his political ideas. This group sought the help from the ULFAs too and that was the most important reason why the ULFAs could penetrate deep into the villages and mingle with the local people of our eastern region. Then a suspended government official who was facing corruption charges for embezzling government money and who was waiting to be tried in the court of law took advantage of this situation and joined hands with this Lama hoping somehow he could get away with heavy pocket and dirty hands just like that. This man was no other than the popular Rongthong Kinley. This group of people used to have secret meetings at various venues in the eastern region including meetings with the ULFA leaders in Deothang jungle camps and also in our neighboring Indian state of AP (Tawang). They had been planning a mission to overthrow our government. Little did they know that our government was doing its homework very well all the time spying and keeping track of the people of this group, or perhaps, they under estimated the royal bhutan police and our royal bhutan army. Then finally in the year 1998-1999, they were starting to smuggle arms and weapons into the country, via two routes, via Tawang and Dilgiri. They were storing the arms in a popular sacred temple in the east (I don’t want to disclose the name of the temple). So, now, if you are a true son of this motherland, what do you expect our government to do? Wait and let there be an armed uprising causing bloodshed and death of our innocent people? I think if you are a wise man, you will do what our royal government did then. Our royal bhutan army took on an pre-emptive strike against this would-be guerillas and crushed the uprising with much peace. Of course, when you deal with an armed man, you do not expect our army to be gentle.

Bhutan is a nation and it is the duty of the royal government to check and uproot these elements that is posing a danger to our national security and that is threatening our nation as one united sovereign country. I personally do not and will not ever want Bhutan to break down into any smaller states because Bhutan is already so small. You can feel the congestion nowadays. So that was the reason why our royal government had to resort to pre-emptive strategy against these uprising in the east. I am satisfied there wasn’t much bloodshed and death in that brief uprising. And I am more happy to be here today----one country, one nation, one people.

I hope Ata Dorjee is more wiser a man now. If he is not wiser now, then either he is too much deluded or he is one of those guys in the east.  In fact many guys in our country are like Ata Dorjee who do not know the actual facts and who are misinformed and dis-informed. But no matter what, if you don’t know, ask people who know. Don’t listen to the gossips of housewives and speeches by the drunkards in the bars and vegetable markets.... get your facts straight!!!
